The tri-toned call of the freight train
always seems sad as it thunders along its
parallel rails on a lonely stretch of prairie.
In all its might, it seems, it still laments
that what is behind can be no more and
what is ahead is veiled in smoke and
does it wonder where it might have gone
if the last switch had been thrown the other way?

At dVerse, Björn has asked us to use trains as our muse.
Short and bitter-sweet. I like.
Love the personification here, Bryan. Wonderful.
I have never considered the thought of those trains, but I agree there is a sadness of those long trains just forging ahead… so very visual
Brilliant use of personification 😀 I am impressed.
I love the tone of this, chugging on through the inevitability of it all, and yet maybe one day the switch will come!
It’s great how you pack so much in to a small poem. And some great thoughts… of time, of lost chances, of alternate paths.
I would love to take the train through the prairie and imagine life on the long stretches ~ Like the thoughts of what might have been Bryan ~
Yes, what if…. So many what ifs.
Quite lonely and yet adventurous. This was a fun poem to read.
