napowrimo 2018 – day 26

day by day and year by year
I built a wall up stone by stone
each layer made that wall more dear
though I was weary to the bone

a wall to keep my loved ones near
to keep at bay the things that harm
to drive away the things of fear
and there I dwelt both safe and warm

but then one day I found a chink
a crack within my mighty wall
and quicker than a single blink
I saw the stones begin to fall

because in me I placed my trust
my fortress crumbled into dust
