This Poem is a Metaphor

This poem is a metaphor for something else
but what it is, it won’t reveal
for even the poet that penned these words
does not fully understand
what his words describe except that
this poem is a metaphor for something else.
Its line lengths vary from fairly (but not too) long
to short
and the ending words do not rhyme
(except some of the time)
and the biggest clue to metaphor is
the repeated refrain
“this poem is a metaphor for something else”
But then again, maybe everything
is a metaphor for something else

  1. I had an eighth-grade student a couple years back who insisted she did not believe in metaphors. I spent a semester trying to convince her that there was greater meaning, and greater enjoyment to be had in literature if she would just give in to metaphor. She prevailed. I waved the white flag. On the last day of school she asked me to sign her yearbook. I wrote, “Life is a metaphor.” You said it much more beautifully!
