To Poets

To those men and women
who weave words
like one might weave threads on a loom
to make a tapestry:
I salute you

To those men and women
who look for the colour in words
and then brush those words on a page
like a painter would do to make a masterpiece
I salute you

To those men and women
who take the seed of an idea
and nurture that seed
clearing away the weeds of un-needed words
like a gardener tending a plant
I salute you

To those who count beats,
tapping their toes
as they rhyme and compose
like a musician creating a symphonic score
I salute you

To the ones who address
the joys and sorrows of this world
like a philospher
expounding on human nature
I salute you

To poets:
whether your words
make us gasp in awe at their beauty,
make us sigh with contentment,
make us rejoice
or make us weep

To poets:
whether your words stick to a form
or fall helter-skelter across the page

To poets:
whether you come
from a place of pleasure,
a place of pain,
or someplace in between

I salute you for
taking emotion
and giving it a voice.

Yes! I salute you!

  1. as the gladiator once said:

for those of us about to die (in verse)
    we salute you….

well he said something like that…a very cool invocation of poetics bryan…
def those willing to bend words…and put it all out there…

    we should salute.

    happy anniversary…

  2. Love how you brought all the arts and philosophy together. “taking emotion and giving it a voice” – terrific tribute to the verve of poets.
