Wood Frog

wood frog
with heart of ice –
waiting for spring

I just caught the tail end of a PBS program about frogs. One of the featured amphibians was the Wood Frog – a species that lives above the Arctic Circle. This fascinating creature pumps glucose through its system when the weather starts turning cold (to prevent its cells from rupturing)…and then all of its organs…including its heart, become covered in ice and stop functioning. This frog literally freezes solid. When Spring returns, this frog thaws and hops away completely unharmed. After seeing that, how could I not write a haiku?
