Obstinate and Pliable – Pilgrims Progress – Pt.2

As soon as Christian had heard Evangelist’s instruction, he set off at a run towards the light that marked where the gate stood. His wife and children saw him and tried to call him back, but he simply plugged his ears and yelled, “Life! life! eternal life!” and kept on going.

His neighbours all came out to see the spectacle. Some mocking, others calling him to return. Two of his neighbours, Obstinate and Pliable decided to go after him and force him to return. When they caught up with Christian, they tried to persuade him to return with them, but Christian was equally adamant that he would continue, and invited them to join him, because he knew that their city would be destroyed. When asked what he was looking for, Christian indicated that he was seeking, “an inheritance incorruptible, undefiled, and that fadeth not away; and it is laid up in heaven, and safe there, to be bestowed, at the time appointed, on them that diligently seek it.”

Obstinate rebuked him and said that he would not give up the comforts of home, but pliable indicated that he would be willing to join Christian on the journed

for comfort of home

one calls his neighbours fools
and turns his back
