The Search

Bjorn Brudberg at dVerse has challenged us to write a poem on a science fiction theme.  I have chosen to write a ballad about a quest to find a new world.  Hope you enjoy!

~~

Ten thousand years and more they slept
To find a haven new
They left behind a broken world
One hundred chosen few

In ship’s computer they relied
In cryogenic rest
To find for them a planet new
Indeed this was their quest

Ten thousand years and more adrift
While searching furthest space
From one sun to the next their ark
Kept searching for a place

Although the trip was planned to last
Millenia in time
The length of this trip proved e’en more
Than that grand paradigm

Ten thousand years and more it seemed
Was pushing things too far
The fuel cells were running low
As they approached a star

The ship’s computer knew one rule
“Arrive whate’er the cost”
At last a proper globe was found
And hope was not all lost

Ten thousand years and more had now
Come fin’ly to an end
The ship now fir’d its thrusters in
A pattern to descend

Touchdown at last on world brand-new
The cabin lights came on
One hundred pods now opened up
But life of all was gone

Ten thousand years and more in vain
One hundred souls had fled
How was it after all of this
That everyone was dead?

“Arrive whate’ere the cost” it seems
As rules go fell quite short
For in its effort to obey
It drained the life-support

Ten thousand years and more they’d slept
To find their haven new
They’d left behind a broken world
Those hundred doomèd few
